Hot Hot Heat

The weather, not the band.
Heat wave going through Chicago/midwest. We're under an "excessive heat warning". If I didn't know life without air conditioning, I would pooh-pooh it as a lame, made up weather forecast, but I can see the dangers. My dad was nice enough to buy me a small window unit which has been on max the past couple of days and nights without a break. Today, even with it on max and several fans going through my room I was just able to keep the temperature liveable. Not so in the other rooms in my apartment. I emerged only to fetch popsicles from my freezer. My poor fish must be boiling alive; it's hotter in my apt. than outside and outside it was upper 90s. Tomorrow the heat index is 105. Poor fish.
The weather makes me long for a beach trip. Not to the beach here. I mean a real, ocean beach. Swimming in the cold ocean. mmmmmmmm. Maybe I'll go swimming tomorrow afternoon. Not for fun, but for exercise since running is out of the question.
Although the sun set a couple hours ago, my room is just now getting to a temperature that could be considered cool. Cool as in I can be under a sheet comfortably.
I'm so lucky to have a/c.
I need an apartment though. And a job.
The heat has sucked all the life out of me. I didn't do anything today yet I'm exhausted. Maybe that'll be good. Go to bed early, wake up early.

The Real World

I'm slowly spiraling deeper into the real world. Although I have yet to find a job (correction: yet to be hired. I've found a job that I want oh-so-much, but won't hear anything for awhile.), I've reached the decision to start looking for apartments. Because I'm staying in Chicago, even if I have to end up working for B&N again.
So I'm looking for apartments without a job. Or income. Ah well.
I found a great one on craigslist that is perfect. It has a dishwasher and a backyard with a pond. I'm looking at it tomorrow.
On Monday, I'm meeting with a realty company to travel around with them while they show me apartments they have listed. My problem is that I don't want a studio. I need rooms, separate spaces. Unfortunately, walls cost more. This morning I just looked at prices of 1 bedroom apartments throughout Chicago and no matter what I do I'm going to be cutting it close with the finances (maybe my job will pay me more than I expect! ;-)).
I'm going to see the Devil Wears Prada now with Miriam. Hooray!

Star Wars vs. Pirates of the Caribbean

Kenny and I have realized that the Star Wars trilogy and the soon-to-be Pirates trilogy are CRAZY similar.
Here are the comparisons:
1. Jack Sparrow = Han Solo. nuf said. (they're both pirates, they're both hot, and they're both badass (waaaay cooler than the "luke" figure). Also, both are misogynistic and ultra-independent. PS. Carbonite vs. Eaten by a giant octopus/squid. CLEARLY the same thing.
2. The movies are similar... episode 4 was a self-contained, happy ending movie, whereas Empire Strikes Back and Dead Man's Chest are much darker and clearly a link between 2 other movies.
3. Both Luke and Will Turner have a (at the beginning) missing father figure who has died. Both have "gone to the dark side", Darth Vader to the actual dark side, Bootstrap to pirating. Also, both are trying to help out their sons in their own ways. Both are in the service of the villain.
4. Both protagonists are battling an evil empire (the empire, the East India trading company).
5. Both Luke and Will developed their fighting skill during their isolated childhoods and are only now using those skills in actual combat.
6. Black Pearl CLEARLY = Millenium Falcon. Both look like hunks of junk but are famed for being the fastest ships in the land.
7. Jack Sparrow and Elizabeth kiss once in the second episode, as do Leia and Han Solo, which defies audience expectations from the first movie (Alison says, "This makes me sad because it might imply that Elizabeth and Jack could be the romantic pairing for the series, which she DOES NOT WANT.")
8. Rebel alliance v. Pirates (who deserve to be called "rebels" more?)
9. The swamp-dwelling wise people: Yoda vs. the voodoo woman. (gross looking, talk funny)
10. This is from Kenny: C3PO and R2D2 are like the fat guy and the skinny guy who are there for comedic relief. I disagree. I mean, I see the LOOSE comparison. But I find that to be one of the weaker links.
11. Lando vs. Barbossa. Both were at one point captains of the main (space)ships. Their goodness/badness is ambiguous. Both helped in getting the han/sparrow character back. (that is assumed, because, obviously, we don't know yet what Barbossa does). This is eh.

If you have any other suggestions, let me know.
Also, I realize that every film has parallels and influence from other stuff... ESPECIALLY fantasy stuff. this is just lots of fun for me.

Again with the long breaks...

This is probably my longest break without writing. I should get a prize.
Fortunately, I'm assuming the long break scared off the 2 people who actually read my blog after I left Deutschland so now I'm free to write WHATEVER! mwa ha ha.

I'm graduated from college now so that means I'm in the "real world". Which isn't that much different than the college world, as I don't have a job yet. If you know of any lawyers who need a legal assistant, let me know. Preferably in Chicago.
On the bright side, after 4 years, I finally have a car! It's a corolla (surprise, surprise) and feels like a new car (aside from the slight wear and couple of stains on the seats... coffee, I think? ;-)) I am awesome and managed to get a GREAT deal, paying less than the edmunds.com pricing for it. Jonathan came with to help me 1. because I needed support to actually do it (buying a car is nerve wracking!) and 2. because having a guy helps you get a better deal if you're a girl/woman. So much for women's lib ;-).
Last night Sam, Eliot, Anthony and I went to the Cubs/Brewers game in Milwaukee. Traffic was abysmal, due to rush hour, tons of people coming up from chicago to go to the game, and construction which closed several onramps in Milwaukee. However the game was a lot of fun. The Cubs won (7-2) and it was very exciting. The stadium is AMAZING, new and shiny and spacious. After a homerun, they shoot off fireworks. I wish wrigley field would do the same. It would make the games much more exciting ;-).
Hopefully I'll get to see Pirates of the Caribbean 2 tonight. That's the plan, at least.
