Star Wars vs. Pirates of the Caribbean
Kenny and I have realized that the Star Wars trilogy and the soon-to-be Pirates trilogy are CRAZY similar.
Here are the comparisons:
1. Jack Sparrow = Han Solo. nuf said. (they're both pirates, they're both hot, and they're both badass (waaaay cooler than the "luke" figure). Also, both are misogynistic and ultra-independent. PS. Carbonite vs. Eaten by a giant octopus/squid. CLEARLY the same thing.
2. The movies are similar... episode 4 was a self-contained, happy ending movie, whereas Empire Strikes Back and Dead Man's Chest are much darker and clearly a link between 2 other movies.
3. Both Luke and Will Turner have a (at the beginning) missing father figure who has died. Both have "gone to the dark side", Darth Vader to the actual dark side, Bootstrap to pirating. Also, both are trying to help out their sons in their own ways. Both are in the service of the villain.
4. Both protagonists are battling an evil empire (the empire, the East India trading company).
5. Both Luke and Will developed their fighting skill during their isolated childhoods and are only now using those skills in actual combat.
6. Black Pearl CLEARLY = Millenium Falcon. Both look like hunks of junk but are famed for being the fastest ships in the land.
7. Jack Sparrow and Elizabeth kiss once in the second episode, as do Leia and Han Solo, which defies audience expectations from the first movie (Alison says, "This makes me sad because it might imply that Elizabeth and Jack could be the romantic pairing for the series, which she DOES NOT WANT.")
8. Rebel alliance v. Pirates (who deserve to be called "rebels" more?)
9. The swamp-dwelling wise people: Yoda vs. the voodoo woman. (gross looking, talk funny)
10. This is from Kenny: C3PO and R2D2 are like the fat guy and the skinny guy who are there for comedic relief. I disagree. I mean, I see the LOOSE comparison. But I find that to be one of the weaker links.
11. Lando vs. Barbossa. Both were at one point captains of the main (space)ships. Their goodness/badness is ambiguous. Both helped in getting the han/sparrow character back. (that is assumed, because, obviously, we don't know yet what Barbossa does). This is eh.
If you have any other suggestions, let me know.
Also, I realize that every film has parallels and influence from other stuff... ESPECIALLY fantasy stuff. this is just lots of fun for me.
